Re: TDIH: Jack Straw in Witchita
Unfortunately, not the positive experience it should have been, though certainly nothing the fault of the show.
I had started working at one of the first independant (read "hippie", though we weren't exactly, but maybe as close as anyone got in Wichita then) record store some months before and was really excited to see one of my favorites. I was frankly stunned they'd play my home town.
Usually we got shows like Deep Purple/Uriah Heep/Humble Pie, but this was different. Anthem of the Sun and Live/Dead had helped form my musical tastes and I was psyched.
Unfortunately, after I got off work and went home to get ready to go, I found out my sister's dog had run off, so I spent my time before the show driving around looking for it.
Wound up going in just before the band started - completely straight.
Didn't even get a chance to twist one before the show.
Didn't matter since as soon as the lights went down at lleast 5000 matches and lighters went off.
Clearly the crowd went wild at Jack Straw from Wichita.
The show remained a fond memory for years, and I could never figure out why it hadn't surfaced, until I realized that there may not have been any audience tapers there.
Since I was most fond of the more exploratory material I got into my element in the second set.
By the way, we did eventually find the dog, almost 60 miles ffrom home, outside Hutchinson, about a week later!
